On the road for those who care

03 June, 2016

Carers Week starts on 6th June and to celebrate, the Carers’ Information and Support Service (CISS) is taking to the road. CISS will be rolling out their information bus to offer support, information and guidance to unpaid carers across Hull.

CISS is a service provided by City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC) and offers free information and advice to the 23,000 plus unpaid carers in Hull, who in turn provide support to family or friends who could not manage without their help.

The CISS roadshow will be visiting a number of venues throughout the week, these are:

  • Monday 6th June from 10am to 4pm: Queen’s Gardens (near the Wilson Centre)
  • Tuesday 7th June from 10am to 4pm: Hessle Road Retail Park
  • Wednesday 8th June from 8am to 12.30pm: Walton Street Market
  • Wednesday 8th June from 1pm to 3.30pm: Pearson Park, Beverley road
  • Thursday 9th June from 10am to 4pm: North Point Shopping Centre
  • Friday 10th June from 10am to 4pm Tesco, Hall Road
  • Saturday 11th June 10am to 4pm: Queen’s Gardens (near the Wilson Centre)

Eileen Macfarlane, Outreach Development Advice Worker for CISS has said, “If somebody looks after a family member, friend or neighbour they are an unpaid carer and could be entitled to advice and support. Unpaid carers are often unaware of the support available to them so we want to reach as many communities in Hull to spread the word.”

An unpaid carer is someone who provides support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.

A Carers Week spokesperson has said, “Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign which takes place to celebrate and recognise the vital contribution made by the 6.5 million people in the UK who care, unpaid, for a disabled, older or ill family member or friend.

“It’s fantastic to see so many events taking place across the country to support local carers. We hope that through these events, individuals, organisations and services will be able to see just what a positive difference they can make to the lives of carers in their communities by thinking about what they need and building carer-friendly communities.”

Carers Week is a national awareness campaign to celebrate and recognise the contribution made by the UKs 6.5million carers.
