Dying matters to all of us

14 May, 2015

City Health Care Partnership CIC’s (CHCP CIC) health and carer services are on the road in Hull to support Dying Matters Week 2015 (18-24 May). The annual awareness week is organised by Dying Matters, a coalition of 30,000 members across England and Wales which includes CHCP CIC and aims to help people talk more openly about dying, death and bereavement, and to make plans for the end of life.

Macmillan Cancer Support volunteers and staff will be on the bus alongside our Macmillan Specialist Care at Home team members and Carers Information and Support Service (CISS) at the following venues:

Monday 18th May from 10am until 3.30pm at Queen Victoria Square, Hull City Centre
Wednesday 20th May from 8am until noon at Walton Street Market, Hull

The ‘roadshow’ aims to get people talking about dying, death and bereavement and making plans for their end of life. Even just having a chat with family, friends or colleagues about the importance of preparing for death can change perceptions.

The theme of this year’s week is ‘Talk, Plan, Live’.  Talk is about starting conversations and who you might want to talk to about sensitive matters. Plan is the important practical steps you can take to have your end of life wishes met, and Live is an important reminder that sorting out the details helps you live life to the full with peace of mind.

Angie Orr, Senior Operations Manager- End of Life Care explained, “We need to get people talking and opening up about a subject that they are understandably reluctant to address. After all, it will happen to all of us one day and it’s within our reach to make it as personal, supportive and as positive experience as it can be.”

There are five simple steps people can take to make their end of life experience better, both for them and for their loved ones. These are:

  • Write your will
  • Record your funeral wishes
  • Plan your future care and support
  • Consider registering as an organ donor
  • Tell your loved ones your wishes

City Health Care Partnership CIC is working with Macmillan Cancer Support in Hull to trial a model called Macmillan Specialist Care at Home which has been rolled out in six locations across the UK. Launched in February this year, the new approach improves care for people affected by cancer and other life limiting conditions at the end of their life.
