Andrew Burnell, Group Chief Executive of CHCP, said, “We have been employee owned since the company was formed 12 years ago and it’s a vital part of who we are. Our colleagues are our shareholders and their £1 share gives them a voice and a say in the direction of the organisation; as we say, it’s everybody’s business and their contribution is crucial to our continued success.

“We are absolutely delighted to be the ninth largest employee-owned company in the UK and it’s a testament to our committed and compassionate colleagues that we continue to grow and thrive.”

There are now more than 1,000 businesses that are employee owned in the UK - a sector that contributes over £30bn to UK GDP.

James de le Vingne, Chief Executive of the EOA, said: “We consistently see the employee owned Top 50 outperform the rest of the UK economy when it comes to productivity.

“There is a lot that can be learned from these businesses when it comes to having better governance and oversight and better performance driven by engaged employees. Combined with the recent growth in the sector, employee ownership is proving its relevance as a model fit for unlocking the potential of people, businesses, and the economy.”

* “Like-for-like” means that we compare each of the fifty companies on this year’s list against its own prior year results only if it appeared on last year’s list. This is to avoid new entrants distorting the comparisons.

** Productivity is defined as value added per employee. Value added is defined as operating profit plus wages.
